Few fighter pilots have achieved the legendary status of Manfred von Richthofen – the “Red Baron.” Serving with the German air forces during the First World War, Richthofen became the conflict’s most famous fighter ace and was officially credited with 80 aerial victories.
His association with brightly painted red aircraft made him instantly recognisable and helped create the legend that has endured long after the war. As commander of Jagdgeschwader 1, popularly known as the “Flying Circus”, Richthofen led some of Germany’s finest fighter pilots.
