This large formation depicts warriors of the inGobamakhosi Regiment, combining traditional Zulu courage with the growing use of captured and traded firearms during the 1879 campaign. While the Zulu army remained famous for its aggressive close-combat tactics, many regiments also deployed warriors armed with muskets and rifles to harass enemy positions and support advancing formations.

The Battle of Gingindlovu proved to be one of the campaign's decisive engagements, as thousands of Zulu warriors launched determined assaults against Lord Chelmsford's carefully prepared defensive square. Although ultimately unsuccessful, the courage and persistence of the attacking regiments demonstrated the fighting spirit that had already earned the Zulu army worldwide respect.
