GWB-03 – British Medium Tank Mark C – “Hornet”
The Medium Mark C, commonly known as the Hornet, represents an intriguing stage in the rapid evolution of British tank design during the First World War.
Developed as Britain sought a more capable medium tank, the Mark C incorporated lessons learned from earlier machines such as the Whippet. It offered a more conventional internal arrangement and represented the direction in which British armoured vehicle development was moving as the war approached its end.
GWB-03 recreates this unusual vehicle, making it particularly interesting for collectors who enjoy the technological development of the Great War rather than concentrating solely upon tanks that saw extensive battlefield service.
The Armistice arrived before the Mark C could make a meaningful combat contribution. Its significance therefore lies largely in what it tells us about how rapidly armoured warfare had progressed between 1916 and 1918.
Displayed beside the Whippet, the two vehicles create a fascinating comparison between successive ideas in British medium tank development.
